SmartMembranes GmbH, Halle [SMART]

SmartMembranes is a 2009 spin-off from the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM and the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg in 2009. The company is the only producer of supported and free-standing macro and nano porous ordered membranes from silicon and alumina worldwide. The structural parameters such as pore size, lattice constant, the porosity, as well as the thickness of the membrane, can be precisely adjusted to the customers’ needs in the nanometer range, with a substrate sizes up to A4.

The participation of SmartMembranes in M3d has two purposes. First, it will provide various standard membranes to partners as a basis for synthesis, so that the latter may concentrate on the development of new processes ; this will quicken research and thus boost the efficiency of M3d. The second purpose is to shorten the chain between research and exploitation into new products. SmartMembranes will benefit from new developments in the synthesis, and work on their up-scaling.
